About Operation Smile
Operation Smile is an international nonprofit organization that provides free surgical and non-surgical care to people born with cleft conditions. Its services include surgical treatment, nutrition interventions, psychosocial care, dental care, and speech therapy.
Operation Smile Ethiopia (OSE) is seeking a motivated and qualified fresh graduate to join its finance team as an Accountant Intern. This internship is based at the Operation Smile Ethiopia Head Office in Addis Ababa.
Position: Accountant Intern
The Accountant Intern will assist the Finance and Operations team with routine accounting, financial administration, documentation, and related activities under the supervision of the Finance and Operations Manager.
This opportunity is suitable for a fresh graduate in Accounting who is interested in gaining practical experience in accounting and nonprofit financial operations.
Educational Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A BA degree in Accounting from a recognized university.
- No previous work experience is required.
Required Skills and Competencies
Applicants should have:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Amharic.
- Basic knowledge of accounting principles.
- Basic computer skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Basic knowledge of internet, Microsoft Teams, and financial tools.
- Motivation and interest in working as an accounting intern.
- Good coordination and teamwork skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and willingness to receive coaching and guidance.
- Flexibility to work during regular working hours and, when necessary, outside regular working hours.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Finance and Operations Manager (FOM), the Accountant Intern will assist with the following activities:
- Support the finance team with routine finance and accounting activities at the office.
- Assist Program Coordinators at partner hospitals with transportation, meal, and accommodation-related payments for patients where there is no dedicated finance staff.
- Prepare necessary documents and facilitate timely payments for training and workshop-related expenses.
- Assist the Finance and Operations Manager in tracking financial transactions and collecting expense and financial documentation from program teams.
- Follow up with Program Coordinators based at partner hospitals to ensure financial documents are collected and settled on time.
- Scan, organize, and maintain financial documents for regular financial reporting.
- Assist the Finance and Operations Manager during visits to banks, tax offices, and other government and non-government institutions.
- Support the collection of financial and related documents from banks, Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority (ERCA)/tax offices, and other relevant institutions.
- Enter monthly purchase data, income tax, pension, and withholding information into relevant government platforms.
- Collect receipts and other supporting documents as required.
- Perform other finance-related duties and activities assigned by the supervisor.
Compensation and Internship Details
This position is a non-employment internship/volunteer opportunity.
Operation Smile Ethiopia will provide an attractive stipend as compensation during the internship.
Important: The selected intern is responsible for providing a functional laptop for the internship.
