About MERSA Media Institute
MERSA Media Institute (MMI) is a nonprofit media policy think tank working to strengthen independent, responsible, and vibrant media ecosystems in Africa. Through research, capacity building, and institutional support, MMI supports the development of media institutions, professional unions, and education centers.
Based in Washington, D.C., MMI’s work focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on Ethiopia, promoting free and independent media as essential for peaceful, democratic, and prosperous societies.
Position: Junior Finance Officer
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- 0–2 years of experience in financial management and compliance, preferably in the NGO sector.
- Basic knowledge of financial accounting principles.
- Familiarity with accounting software (QuickBooks preferred).
- Experience in processing payments and procurement-related financial documentation is a plus.
- Willingness to learn and apply donor compliance and finance policies.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy in recordkeeping, and good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a finance/project team.
- Exposure to audits or financial reviews is an advantage.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Track procurement-related expenditures against project budgets and donor guidelines.
- Reconcile procurement transactions and ensure accurate coding/classification in the system.
- Assist in preparing monthly cash forecasts, financial reports, and donor compliance reports.
- Support internal audits, donor reviews, and financial closures.
- Provide guidance on procurement compliance to project staff.
- Maintain accurate HR and administrative records (contracts, payroll, leave management, inventories).
- Assist in managing office assets and supplies for accountability.
- Support staff orientation, training logistics, and team meetings with financial input.
- Implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
- Carry out other finance and administration-related tasks as assigned.
