About the UN Young Professionals Programme

The United Nations Young Professionals Programme (YPP) is an entry point for highly motivated individuals to begin their professional careers with the UN Secretariat. Candidates who successfully pass the YPP examination are placed on a three-year roster used to fill relevant vacancies across the UN.

Placement on the roster does not guarantee employment, but selected candidates are offered a two-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of a continuing contract after satisfactory performance.

The YPP aims to identify and nurture talented professionals to strengthen the UN’s capacity in areas critical to international peace, development, and humanitarian action.

Position: Young Professionals Programme – Global Communications

Education Requirements:

  • At least a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent, minimum three years) in one of the following fields:
    • Arts
    • Business & Administration
    • Computing
    • Journalism & Information
    • Humanities
    • Social & Behavioral Sciences

Important Notes:

  • Choose the closest field of study if your exact degree is not listed in the Inspira system.
  • Do not select “Other” for main course of study or field of study, or your application will be disqualified.

Work Experience:

  • No prior work experience is required.
  • Relevant experience may be considered if more than 90 candidates from the same country apply to the same exam area.

Key Responsibilities

An Associate Communications Officer under the YPP in Global Communications may be involved in:

  • Media monitoring and analysis across traditional, digital, and social platforms to inform strategy.
  • Implementing communications strategies that raise awareness and drive engagement.
  • Drafting narratives, press releases, web stories, reports, and infographics.
  • Producing audiovisual content including promo videos, live coverage, and podcasts.
  • Coordinating press conferences, briefings, and media events.
  • Developing strategic communications campaigns and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Delivering outreach and advocacy campaigns to target audiences.
  • Data collection, trend analysis, and visualization to support decision-making and reporting.
  • Staying up-to-date with communications trends and emerging technologies.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with UN data security and privacy standards.

Vienna, Santiago, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Beirut, Bangkok, New York, Geneva
