About Operation Smile
Operation Smile is an international non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe surgical care to people born with cleft lip and cleft palate conditions. Founded in 1982, the organization provides free surgeries and additional healthcare services including nutrition support, psychosocial care, dental services, and speech therapy.
Operation Smile has been operating in Ethiopia since 2005, implementing programs in partnership with leading hospitals such as Jimma University Medical Center, St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, and Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The organization has also recently partnered with Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital to expand cleft surgical services in the Sidama Region.
Operation Smile Ethiopia is currently offering an internship opportunity for fresh medical graduates to support program activities at St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.
Position: Intern – St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College
The intern will support patient coordination, outreach activities, and program implementation related to cleft surgery services. The position reports to the Program Manager at the Operation Smile Ethiopia head office.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from a recognized university with zero years of work experience
- Strong communication skills in both English and Amharic
- Knowledge of Afan Oromo is considered an advantage
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, internet usage, and Microsoft Teams
- Knowledge of social media platforms including content development, posting, and monitoring
- Motivation to work in a hospital environment as an intern
- Strong teamwork and coordination skills
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new tasks
- Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Senior Patient Coordinator in recruiting and organizing patients for weekly cleft surgeries
- Support outreach activities aimed at raising community awareness about cleft surgical services
- Assist with patient data management including REDCap documentation and patient health records
- Prepare monthly patient lists and program reports
- Work with the Logistics Coordinator and hospital teams to forecast and quantify medical supplies and equipment
- Support coordination between Operation Smile Ethiopia and St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College
- Assist with additional tasks assigned by the Program Manager or supervisor
Compensation
- This is a non-employment internship position. Interns will receive a stipend during the internship period.
- Note: Interns are required to bring their own functional laptop.
