Job Summary
The Midwife will provide quality healthcare services focusing on sexual and reproductive health (SRH), maternal and child health (MCH), antenatal and postnatal care, and safe deliveries for internally displaced people and host communities in North Gondar, Ethiopia.
Key Responsibilities
Medical / Technical
- Provide SRH services including antenatal care, postnatal care, safe deliveries, STI treatment, rape case management, and family planning
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols
- Prescribe medications according to guidelines and instruct patients on usage
- Provide timely referrals to relevant health facilities
- Monitor availability of medications and supplies; report shortages to the MHNT Team Lead
- Support breastfeeding activities and re-lactation in coordination with the nutrition team
- Maintain patient records as per MOH and WHO standards
- Support mothers in caring for their children, including psychosocial support
- Collaborate with health promotion teams on community health messages
- Ensure safeguarding of program participants, upholding child and adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies
- Assist Medical Doctor with reporting and additional duties as needed
Quality Management
- Maintain a clean, private, and comfortable work environment for patients
- Provide care following MOH guidelines
- Ensure rational use of drugs and avoid overprescribing
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients
- Support colleagues in infection control practices
Additional Activities
- Assist other clinic areas as needed to ensure quality care
- Maintain safe working environment and proper disposal of waste and sharps
- Promote safeguarding awareness among staff and program participants
- Remain alert to child and adult protection risks and respond appropriately
Job Requirements
Education, Licenses & Certification
- BSc in Midwifery
- Renewed professional midwife license
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience post-qualification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of development and humanitarian contexts
- Fluent in Amharic and English (spoken and written)
- Strong interpersonal, team, and communication skills
- Flexible, adaptable, and able to work under pressure
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Computer literate (MS Office and mobile platforms)
- Negotiation and representation skills
- Emotionally and spiritually mature with humanitarian motivation
- Ability to travel to remote and insecure locations
