Nib International Bank was established on May 26, 1999, under license No. LBB/007/99 according to the Commercial Code of Ethiopia and the Proclamation for Licensing and Supervision of Banking Business No. 84/1994.
The bank started operations on October 28, 1999, with 27 employees and an initial paid-up capital of Birr 27.6 million contributed by 717 shareholders. It joined the Ethiopian banking sector as the sixth private commercial bank in the country.
