Job Summary

The WASH Officer – Hygiene Promotion will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring community hygiene and sanitation promotion activities. The role is based in Dolo Ado refugee camps and host communities and aims to reduce WASH-related public health risks through capacity building, behavior change, and effective coordination.

Key Responsibilities

Generic Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement hygiene promotion activities using effective Behavior Change Communication (BCC) strategies.
  • Conduct baseline/endline assessments and KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices) surveys.
  • Develop context-specific IEC (Information, Education, Communication) materials.
  • Monitor WASH-related health data to evaluate program impact.
  • Lead sanitation infrastructure activities with a focus on sustainability.
  • Train and support hygiene promoters, WASH committees, school health clubs, and incentive staff.
  • Facilitate accountability mechanisms and ensure community feedback is incorporated.
  • Ensure gender, protection, and inclusion principles are applied in all WASH activities.
  • Represent NRC in WASH sector meetings and maintain active coordination with UNHCR, RRS, and NGOs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supervise sanitation and hygiene promotion activities and ensure community ownership.
  • Lead the implementation of community-based hygiene and health approaches.
  • Facilitate WASH committees and school clubs for sustained hygiene practices.
  • Collect and analyze data related to WASH-related health outcomes.
  • Assist in designing relevant IEC tools for public health awareness and hygiene training.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related health science field.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in hygiene promotion in humanitarian or refugee contexts.
  • Fluency in Somali and English, both spoken and written.
  • Strong skills in BCC, KAP surveys, and community mobilization.
  • Familiarity with Sphere Standards, UNHCR WASH guidelines, and gender-sensitive programming.
  • Experience using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Prior field experience in Dolo Ado refugee response is highly preferred.
