About the Fellowship
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is one of the world’s leading research universities and participates in the prestigious Schmidt Science Fellows Program, which develops the next generation of scientific leaders.
The fellowship is designed for exceptional PhD graduates in science, engineering, mathematics, and computing who wish to undertake interdisciplinary postdoctoral research in a field different from their doctoral specialization.
In addition to conducting research at a world-leading laboratory, fellows participate in global leadership training, international workshops, and mentoring throughout the fellowship year.
Fellowship Benefits

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or international student.
- Be enrolled in or have completed a PhD at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
- Hold a graduate degree in:
- Computing
- Engineering
- Natural Sciences
- Mathematics
- Related scientific disciplines
- Complete (or expect to complete) their PhD within the program’s eligible timeframe.
- Be available for the full fellowship period, including required international meetings and training sessions.
- Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and research excellence.

Selection Process
- UBC departments submit nominations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
- A university review committee evaluates all nominations.
- UBC nominates up to nine candidates to the international Schmidt Science Fellows competition.
- Successful nominees are invited by the Schmidt Science Fellows program to submit a full application.
Required Application Documents
Applicants should prepare:
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 3 pages), including publications
- Personal Statement (maximum 1 page) describing:
- Interest in interdisciplinary postdoctoral research
- Collaborative experience
- Research Proposal (maximum 2 pages) including:
- Proposed postdoctoral research direction
- Brief rationale for up to three preferred postdoctoral laboratories
