About the University of British Columbia Fellowships
The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the Schmidt Science Fellowships 2026 for domestic and international students. This program targets outstanding early-career researchers in Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics.
UBC Fellowships aim to develop the next generation of scientific leaders by providing a platform for interdisciplinary postdoctoral research. Fellows receive mentorship, access to international workshops, and hands-on experience in world-leading laboratories.
Fellowship Benefits
- Stipend: $100,000 USD for one year of full-time postdoctoral research

Eligibility Criteria
- Must hold a graduate degree in Computing, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or related fields
- PhD must be completed or expected to be completed between May 15, 2025, and June 30, 2026 (PhD must be from UBC)
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international candidates are eligible
- Availability for the entire fellowship period (July 2026 – September 2027), including global meetings

Evaluation & Selection Procedure
- Nominations are reviewed by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
- Departments can nominate up to nine students for the international competition
- Selection is based on:
- Academic achievement
- Alignment with the Schmidt Fellows program
- Global ambitions and potential impact
- Collaborative history and innovative thinking
Application Procedure
Applicants must submit their materials to their UBC graduate program. A complete application includes:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) – max. 3 pages, including publications
- Statement from Nominee – max. 1 page addressing:
- Alignment with Schmidt Fellows program
- Demonstrated collaborative spirit
- Proposal from Nominee – max. 2 pages addressing:
- Potential postdoctoral research direction
- Rationale for up to three potential postdoctoral fellowship labs
Note: Successful UBC nominees will be invited by the Schmidt Science Fellows program to submit a full application later.
