About OHCHR
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is the principal United Nations office responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.
Through its country and regional programs, the organization works to protect the rights of all individuals, empower people to claim their rights, and support governments and institutions in fulfilling their human rights obligations.
The internship position will support the OHCHR Ethiopia Country Programme, contributing to activities related to human rights monitoring, capacity building, and technical cooperation.
The intern will report to the Deputy Country Representative of OHCHR-EARO and the Team Leader of the Capacity Building and Technical Cooperation Workstream, under the overall coordination of the Regional Representative.
Position: Intern – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
This internship provides an opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in human rights, international relations, law, and policy to gain professional experience within the United Nations system.
Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (Master’s degree or higher)
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree program
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate degree program in law, human rights, or related fields
Work Experience
No prior professional experience is required for the United Nations Internship Programme.
However, applicants’ education, training, or research experience should be relevant to the work of the United Nations.
Key Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities of the intern may include:
- Monitoring and analyzing human rights developments and trends in Ethiopia
- Supporting work related to accountability, transitional justice, civic space, and rights of women and persons with disabilities
- Conducting research and drafting reports, notes, and briefing documents
- Assisting in organizing human rights workshops, trainings, and events
- Supporting engagement with UN human rights mechanisms and stakeholders
- Assisting efforts to integrate human rights perspectives into national policies and strategies
- Participating in meetings and conferences and taking notes and preparing summaries
- Performing additional tasks as assigned by supervisors
Language Requirements
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French.
For this internship:
- Fluency in English and Amharic is required
- Knowledge of another Ethiopian language is an advantage
