The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) works to promote the economic and social development of African countries and advance regional integration and cooperation across the continent.
Economic Affairs Intern Internship
The Economic Affairs Intern will work under the supervision of a staff member within the assigned department or office. The intern will support research, coordination, training, data collection, and policy-related activities connected with infrastructure and economic development in Africa.
The internship will provide practical exposure to the work of a United Nations regional commission and to issues involving energy, water, digital infrastructure, connectivity, and data-centre development in Africa.
Key Responsibilities
1. Research and Analytical Support
The intern will:
- Assist Section officers with analytical research under their guidance.
- Contribute to research papers concerning energy, water, and data centres in Africa.
- Collect and organize relevant information and data.
- Review academic, policy, and other relevant literature.
- Prepare initial summaries, background notes, and research materials.
- Support officers with research-related tasks as required.
2. Webinar Coordination
The intern will assist with organizing webinars and related activities by:
- Supporting participant outreach.
- Preparing draft agendas and background materials.
- Helping with logistical arrangements.
- Assisting with technical preparations.
- Documenting key discussions and outcomes.
- Recording follow-up action points.
3. Training Activities
The intern will support training activities through:
- Preparing draft agendas and supporting materials.
- Liaising with facilitators and partner institutions as directed.
- Helping coordinate logistical and technical requirements.
- Supporting the delivery of training sessions.
- Collecting participant feedback.
- Documenting training outcomes and follow-up activities.
4. Data-Centre Development Guideline
The intern will support the development of a guideline for data-centre development in Africa.
Responsibilities may include:
- Conducting background research.
- Reviewing international and regional good practices.
- Collecting relevant data and case studies.
- Supporting consultations with member States.
- Assisting with engagement involving private-sector stakeholders, development partners, and technical experts.
- Supporting the drafting and review of recommendations under supervision.
The guideline will address areas including:
- Enabling policies
- Digital infrastructure
- Energy infrastructure
- Water use
- Environmental sustainability
- Investment
- Connectivity
- Cybersecurity
- Skills development
- Regulatory frameworks
- Resilient and sustainable data-centre ecosystems
5. Other Duties
The intern may also be required to carry out other tasks and assignments based on the needs of the Connectivity and Infrastructure Development Section and the relevant division.
Internship Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:
Option A: Be currently enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme leading to a second university degree or equivalent qualification, or a higher degree.
Option B: Be currently enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme leading to a minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
Applicants should also demonstrate:
- A strong interest in the work of the United Nations.
- A personal commitment to the ideals and principles of the United Nations Charter.
- Interest in economic affairs and development issues.
- Ability to conduct research and organize information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a professional and multicultural environment.
Internship Duration and Working Arrangement
The Economic Affairs Internship is full-time for three months, with the possibility of extension.
Interns are expected to work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
An internship certificate may be awarded upon the recommendation of the supervisor.
