About UNCTAD

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is an intergovernmental organization within the United Nations Secretariat that supports developing countries in achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

UNCTAD promotes fair participation in the global economy by providing policy analysis, technical assistance, and consensus-building in areas such as international trade, investment, finance, and technology.

The internship is based in the Regional Office for Africa (ROA) under the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC).

Position Available

Economic Affairs Intern

The internship offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in economic research, policy analysis, and international development while working with the United Nations.

The internship is full-time (40 hours per week) and may be completed in person or remotely.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a Master’s Degree, PhD, or equivalent graduate program, or
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final year of a Bachelor’s Degree program.

In addition, applicants must:

• Hold or be pursuing a degree in Economics.
• Have a field of study closely related to the internship.
• Have no prior professional work experience (not required).
• Be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in the work and values of the United Nations.
• Be able to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Desirable

• Experience conducting desktop research.
• Ability to draft concept notes, research papers, and project proposals.

Internship Responsibilities

Successful interns may support activities such as:

• Conducting economic and policy research.
• Preparing concept notes and research papers.
• Assisting with project and research proposals.
• Supporting data collection and analysis.
• Contributing to the work of the Regional Office for Africa.
