The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is a regional organization aimed at promoting economic and social development across Africa. UNECA provides support to staff and their dependents through a comprehensive health care program and operates the UN Health Care Center (UNHCC) in Addis Ababa. The organization emphasizes emergency preparedness, occupational health, and public health initiatives to safeguard personnel and communities.

Position Summary

The General Practitioner (GP) will deliver primary and emergency medical care to UN staff and their eligible dependents. The role encompasses clinical duties, emergency response, disaster preparedness, patient care coordination, health education, and participation in public health programs. The GP may be deployed to UNHCC satellite clinics as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend to emergency cases and walk-in patients, ensuring timely and effective clinical care.
  • Conduct patient assessments, diagnose illnesses, and provide appropriate treatment.
  • Refer patients to specialists or higher-level care facilities as needed.
  • Provide standby duties during emergencies.
  • Deliver health education on preventive health, disease management, and wellness programs.
  • Participate in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), First Aid, and other emergency training sessions.
  • Support planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records per UN protocols.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including nurses, specialists, and administrative staff.
  • Stay updated on medical developments, clinical guidelines, and public health best practices.

Qualifications and Skills

Education

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Current unrestricted registration with the Ethiopian medical licensing authority.
  • Mandatory emergency training: BLS, ALS, PHTLS, or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years as a General Practitioner, preferably in hospital or polyclinic settings.
  • Experience in emergency medicine and primary care highly desirable.
  • Experience delivering health education and participating in public health initiatives.
  • Prior work in international organizations is an advantage.
  • Experience as an emergency training instructor (BLS, ALS, First Aid) is preferred.

Additional Information

  • Contract administered through United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) under Local Individual Contractor Agreement.
  • UN Clinic operates 24/7 with 12-hour shift schedules; total weekly hours: 37.5.
  • Extra working hours are compensated with time-off, no overtime payment.
  • Technical assessment and competency-based interview will be conducted for shortlisted candidates.
  • Only Ethiopian nationals or those with valid residence and work permits in Ethiopia are eligible.
