The Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA) is a non-profit women’s advocacy organization established in 1995 by Ethiopian women lawyers and began operations in 1996. EWLA is headquartered in Addis Ababa and operates six branch offices across Bahir Dar, Assosa, Hawassa, Adama/Nazareth, Dire Dawa, and Gambella. It is supported by over 50 trained voluntary committee members at the woreda and zonal levels, enabling the organization to effectively reach grassroots communities throughout Ethiopia.

EWLA’s mission is to promote the economic, political, social, and legal rights of women, ensuring full protection under the FDRE Constitution and international human rights conventions.

Position: Intern Legal Aid Providers

Required Qualifications and Competencies

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB)
  • 0 years of experience (Fresh graduates encouraged to apply)
  • Prior exposure to legal aid centers through internships or volunteer roles is an advantage
  • Familiarity with:
    • Ethiopian legal and criminal justice systems
    • Ethiopian criminal and procedural laws
    • Legal rights of detainees and prisoners
    • National and international human rights laws

Personal Attributes:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to explain legal matters in simple language
  • Passion for justice and women’s rights
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and minimal supervision
  • Fluency in Amharic and English (other local languages are a plus)
  • Proficiency in computer and documentation tools
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality and marginalized groups’ rights

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice to women detainees and prisoners during investigations and trials
  • Manage legal cases with proper documentation and follow-ups
  • Coordinate with courts, police, and other relevant entities
  • Prepare and submit regular activity and progress reports
  • Maintain ethical standards in all legal service provisions
