About the HLA Scholarship Programme
The HLA Scholarship Programme 2026–2027 is HLA’s flagship scholars programme, designed to equip healthcare professionals with interdisciplinary leadership skills through a structured, project-based learning experience delivered over one scholar year.
According to HLA, the programme is free at the point of access, with programme fees fully covered by scholarships funded through partner organizations.
Programme Structure & Time Commitment
The scholar year includes:
- 8 mandatory contact days spread over 12 months
- Independent online learning via the scholar portal (approximately 1 hour per week)
- Programme commencement in September 2026
Delivery Mode & Cohort Options
Participants may choose between:
- In-person cohorts (education sites include London, Newcastle, Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam)
- Fully online global cohort delivered through live virtual contact days
Cohorts are interdisciplinary and typically consist of 10–15 scholars, bringing together healthcare professionals from different countries and professional backgrounds.
Curriculum Focus Areas
The programme is mapped to the UK NHS Leadership Framework and covers six leadership domains:
- The Leader as a Communicator
- The Leader as a Manager
- The Leader as a Negotiator
- The Leader as an Innovator and Entrepreneur
- The Leader as a Follower
- The Leader as a Philosopher
Scholar Project
Each scholar is required to design and develop an individual leadership project during the programme year. HLA notes that previous scholar projects have received recognition through:
- Awards and prizes
- Academic publications
- Conference presentations
Eligibility Criteria
The HLA Scholarship Programme is open to outstanding applicants from:
- Medical professionals
- Nursing professionals
- Allied health professionals
Additional eligibility notes:
- The programme is not clinical stage-specific (participants range from students to senior professionals)
- Applications may be considered from senior non-clinical leaders, ex-clinical leaders, and mid- to senior-level academics
- Participants may enroll while studying at another institution, as HLA is a social-purpose programme rather than a university degree
Costs, Funding & What the Scholarship Covers
The scholarship provides:
- Full coverage of programme fees
- Access to HLA learning platforms, mentoring, and leadership resources
Please note:
- Scholars are generally responsible for travel and accommodation for in-person sessions
- Personal internet and connectivity costs are covered by participants
- The programme leads to ILM Level 7 (ILM7) recognition
- Any required annual subscription related to post-nominals or continued access to materials is the responsibility of the scholar
HLA states that up to 100 scholarships are offered annually to applicants assessed as appointable and likely to benefit from the programme.
