About ICRC
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral, and independent humanitarian organization. Its mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence, providing them with assistance while promoting international humanitarian law (IHL) and universal humanitarian principles.
The ICRC Legal Team in Ethiopia provides government institutions with legal advice and technical assistance on IHL implementation and contributes to research, policy development, and advocacy in humanitarian law.
Position: Legal Intern
Qualifications
- LL.B. with knowledge and strong interest in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law
- LLM in these fields is an asset
- Excellent research, analytical, writing, and communication skills
- Experience in national, regional, or international IHL or human rights moot courts is a plus
- Ability to work under tight schedules and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in English and Amharic; knowledge of additional languages is advantageous
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and support seminars, dissemination programs, and roundtables on IHL topics
- Present on general and thematic IHL topics at external events
- Support legal team in monitoring, evaluation, and drafting of legal notes, policy recommendations, and position papers
- Conduct legal research and draft analysis on specific thematic areas
- Assist in the preparation of ICRC national and international IHL competitions
- Translate documents accurately between English and national languages
- Maintain and update IHL databases and documentation systems
- Provide administrative and operational support to the legal team
- Represent the legal team in internal meetings when required
- Support other departments with legal-operational advice upon request
- Ensure accurate and confidential handling of information and timely submission of reports
