Position: Human Rights Officer

Qualifications and Experience

  • MA or BA degree in LLM, Human Rights Law, International Law
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience for BA holders; 2 years for MA holders
  • Computer literate
  • Proficiency in Amharic and English; knowledge of other local languages is an advantage

Purpose of the Job

The Human Rights Officer will conduct monitoring, research, advocacy, and awareness activities to promote and protect economic and social rights. The role will assist in developing and implementing strategies, campaigns, and reports while collaborating with stakeholders at different levels.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis to identify human rights violations and legislative gaps with actionable recommendations
  • Monitor selected institutions to ensure compliance with national and international human rights standards
  • Produce reports and remedial recommendations based on monitoring results
  • Conduct awareness-raising campaigns on economic and social rights
  • Advocate for human rights through dialogues, conferences, forums, and media channels
  • Support human rights education programs
  • Assist in investigating complaints related to economic and social rights violations
  • Draft human rights reports, communications, and briefing notes
  • Contribute to annual plans aligned with EHRC’s Strategic Plan and program priorities
  • Maintain collaboration with government institutions, civil society organizations, UN agencies, private sector, and development partners
  • Support monitoring and evaluation of projects on economic and social rights
  • Report progress and challenges regularly to the Director
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director
